Groups
Split expenses with friends, roommates, or travel companions — track who owes whom and settle up.
Groups let you organize people you share expenses with — friends on a trip, roommates, family. Create a group, add members, and log shared expenses. Simplony tracks balances and suggests the fewest payments needed to settle up.
Creating a group
- Go to Groups in the sidebar (or the "More" menu on mobile)
- Tap New Group and give it a name — e.g. "Trip to Rome" or "Apartment"
- You're automatically added as the first member
Adding members
Add people by name, or by name and email. Members with a Simplony account see the group in their dashboard and receive notifications. Members without an account are tracked by name.
Shared accounts
Groups can also have shared accounts — things like "Group Revolut" or "Petty Cash" that represent a shared pot of money rather than a person. Shared accounts can pay for or receive expenses and settlements just like members, but they don't receive notifications — including settlement notifications (see Settlements below). Add one from the Shared Accounts section on the Members tab.
Shared account balances also appear on your Accounts page alongside your personal balance accounts.
Adding expenses
Open the Expenses tab inside a group and tap Add Expense. You can:
- Choose a split mode — equal, exact amounts, percentages, or shares
- Select one or more payers — including shared accounts
- Pick which members share the cost — uncheck anyone who shouldn't be in the split
- Link a balance account — optionally track which personal account the payment came from
Expenses show up in a running list with expandable details. Each member sees their own share.
Editing and deleting expenses
Tap any expense to edit it. You can change the title, amount, date, payers, split mode, or who's included. Members involved in the expense receive a notification summarizing what changed. Expenses can also be deleted — this reverses all balances.
Balances and settlements
The Members tab shows each member's net balance — how much they owe or are owed. Simplony suggests the minimum number of payments to settle all debts.
To record a payment, tap Record Settlement or use a suggested settlement. Settlements update balances immediately and notify the other party. Note: shared accounts do not receive notifications, so a settlement where the payer or payee is a shared account will not trigger a notification to that account.
Personal budget integration
Each member can optionally categorize their own share of a group expense into personal budget categories. This lets your group spending count toward your personal budget without anyone else seeing your categories.
Unallocated shares count as uncategorized shared spending in your budget.
AI assistant
The AI assistant understands groups. Try:
- "Add a 60 dinner to Trip to Rome, split equally"
- "Who owes whom in Apartment?"
- "Record a settlement from me to Alice for 25"
- "Add a shared account called Group Revolut to Trip to Rome"
